How To Root Android Device Manually

This is not my tutorial and i have not tested this on my phone so please don't ask me for troubleshooting.....
the link of the original poster is given at the end of the post and all credit goes to him. I am just posting here so that fellow members can make use of this tutorial

Requirements and rooting process

  • Your  unrooted Android device
  • ADB drivers for your device installed on your PC (I used WinXP. You may use Win 7/Vista or the Linux distro of your choice) To download adb drivers Click here
  • Download su, busybox, Superuser.apk
  • A working linux distro with Nautilus (I used a live usb stick of Ubuntu 11.04)
  • Strength, courage and whatever makes you a man according to Emerson.

Rooting Process

To start, you must have adb installed on the OS of your choice.
I used my trusty WinXP system.

To confirm your device is properly detected, in the command prompt, run
Code:
adb devices
Now copy busybox, su, superuser.apk to /data/local/tmp/ using adb.

Code:
adb push busybox /data/local/tmp adb push su /data/local/tmp adb push Superuser.apk /data/local/tmp
[IMG]

Now run adb shell

Code:
adb shell
Note that you see a "$" sign in the command prompt. That means you are not rooted.
Next run the following commands in the shell to change permissions and get some limited privileges for the Superuser files:

Code:
chmod 6755 /data/local/tmp/su chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/busybox chmod 644 /data/local/tmp/Superuser.apk
Note that the names of the files are case sensitive.

Done?
Turn off your Android device using the power button.

Now you need to reboot your system into a Linux distro which has Nautilus.
Android and Linux, having a similar heritage, makes it possible for us to get root access over the Android phone if you are running with root privileges within Linux. I used an Ubuntu 11.04 Live USB disk to save the hassle of installing another os.

When you have booted into Linux, open up terminal and type:
Code:
sudo nautilus
This would open up the Nautilus file browser with root privileges.

Now put your Android device into Download mode.
For Spice MI-410/Huawei Ideos X6/CherryMobile Magnum HD/Wellcom A99 the method is to hold down the Volume up button and simultaneously turn on the phone using the power on switch.

Once in download mode, connect the Android device using the microusb cable to the computer.
Now using the open Nautilus window, navigate to /UserData/local/tmp/ folder and verify that you have the files you sent to the device viz. su, busybox and Superuser.apk

Move/cut-paste su and busybox to /system/bin/ using Nautilus.
Move/cut-paste Superuser.apk to /system/app/ using Nautilus.

Now pull out the battery from your Android device.
I swear, this was the most tedious part on my MI-410 which has such a crappy back cover.

Now simply turn on your device.
You must now have root.

Verify by running:
Code:
adb shell su
You'll note that the "$" prompt will turn into a "#" and you'll be prompted by a Superuser permission notification on your
device.

You have now completed your initiation brethren.
Welcome to the root club.

For all purposes, consider that your warranty will be void if you follow these steps

I am not responsible for any loss, monetary or otherwise arising as a result of this article.
If you don't feel up to it, quit now and close this web page.

I must assert that although I am aware of no reason why this should not work on *any* Android device, phone or tablet, I have only tested this on my Spice MI-410 crossflashed with the leaked CherryMobile MagnumHD Gingerbread 2.3.4 firmware.

I have tried to explain it in the easiest way I can, but I must state here that this is by no means an easy task and you must persevere. If you can't follow the steps to the letter, its better you don't follow them at all and wait for a single click app for this or a custom rooted firmware.

How to Make Windows Show File Extensions

If you’re a Windows power user you probably already know how to do this, but for everybody else, it can be useful to see file extensions so that you know for sure what type of file you are dealing with.

This can also help in situations where you download what you think is a PDF file, and the real extension is .pdf.exe, which means you downloaded an executable program file, which is most likely a virus. So by showing file extensions you can verify that you are really dealing with a .pdf file. (Note that PDF files often have their own security problems)

About File Extensions

File extensions are the short three of four letter codes separated from the name of a file by a period. These indicate the type of file you are dealing with, and tell your operating system what program to use for opening these files. For example, audio files come in many formats including: .wav, .wma, .aac, and .mp3.

By default, Windows hides these extensions to prevent users from tampering with the file names and rendering them useless. This is handy for people who aren’t very familiar with computers, but sometimes you need to see what they are.

Making Windows Show File Extensions

There is a methods using control pannal you can use for toggling the “Show File Extensions” feature in Windows. To know follow my steps,

Open control pannal Followed by Folder option.

Under the “View” tab, in the “Advanced settings” box, deselect the “Hide extensions for known file types” option.

Lastly, click “Apply” then “OK” to complete the process. Now you will see the file extensions of every file shown at the end of their names...

How to track your stolen Android phone or tablet

Have you (ever) lost your Android smartphone or tablet without having a device tracking app installed? Then you should read this! This could be your chance to get your precious device back.

Thanks to a new native Android tool, you can now easily locate your phone and (in a worst case scenario) perform a remote data wipe. Read on as we show you how to activate the feature on your phone.

Why Do I Want to Do This?

Whether you’re just prone to losing your phone in your house or you’re worried about data security if your phone is actually stolen, there’s no good reason to skip turning on the security features available through Android Device Manager. It’s free, it has next to no overhead, and you can access it to locate your device and/or remote wipe it from any computer you can log into your Google account from.

What Do I Need?

To follow along with this tutorial you’ll need the following things:

  • 1 Android device running Android OS 2.2+
  • 1 Google account
  • Your device is connected with your Google account.
  • Allowed ADM to lock your device and erase its data (turned off by default).
  • Allowed Android Device Manager (ADM) to locate your device (turned on by default). This can changed in the Google Settings app.
  • Your device has access to the internet.

Note: While Android Device Manager has been available to Google business account users for some time, Google only started rolling it out to consumer/standard accounts in early August, 2013. If Android Device Manager isn’t on your Android phone yet, check back in a few days to see if you’ve received the update.

Android Device Manager is a Google’s official and easy-to-use tool to track your Android phone or tablet. The best thing about it is that you don’t need to install an app to be able to track your devices. The only requirement is that your device is connected to your Google account, turned on and connected to the internet.
Besides tracking, letting your phone ring and wiping your phone (which has to be enabled manually), Android Device Manager doesn’t offer more options to remote control your phone. Hopefully, Google will work on that and offer more features, such as  taking pictures in case it got stolen and you want to know who took it.
In case there’s no laptop around when you lose your device, you can also use someone else’s Android phone to track it. Instead of using the mobile browser, you can also use the Android Device Manager app. If you the other phone doesn’t have it, simply download it here. You can sign in using the guest mode and your Google account credentials. Now you should be able to track your lost device, let it ring or wipe its data.
Now, Go to https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager

Once you’ve set up the Android Device Manager on your phone, you can begin managing it from the Android Device Manager web portal, available at: https://www.google.com/android/devicemanager. The first time you access the service you’ll need to accept an agreement to allow Android Device Manager to use your location data.

After that, you can select your device from the drop-down menu in the corner and perform one of three tasks.

First, using GPS/Wi-Fi location data from the phone, you can locate the phone. This feature is dependent on recent GPS data, and if the GPS/location functionality has been turned off on the phone for a period of time (say, several days), it will simply report that the location is unavailable.

Second, you can ring the device to locate it if it is in earshot. Even if your phone has the ringer turned off or set to vibrate it will switch to the default ringtone at 100% volume. This is the most practical feature of Android Device Manager as not many people routinely deal with device theft, but many of us are guilty of misplacing our devices.

Finally, you can remotely wipe the device. This function initiates a factory wipe on the device. The portion of the warning “We may not be able to wipe the content of the SD card in your device” is a bit ambiguous. Internal storage designated as /sdcard will be wiped. Removable SD cards may be wiped depending on the hardware/OS version. The business version of Android Device Manager has a specific wipe-SD-card functionality, which if not already deployed in the consumer version of Android Device Manager will likely be deployed in the near future.

How to Disable Startup Programs in Windows

The more software you install on your computer, the longer it may seem to take to start up Windows. Many programs add themselves to the list of programs started when you boot your computer, and that list can get long.....
If you are using Windows 8, scroll down.

Disabling Startup Programs in Windows 7, Vista, or XP

For some programs, it’s smart to have them start with Windows, such as anti-virus and firewall software. However, for most programs, starting them at boot-up just wastes resources and extends startup time. There is a tool installed with Windows, called MSConfig, that allows you to quickly and easily see what’s running at startup and disable the programs you prefer to run on our own after startup as needed. This tool is available and can be used to disable startup programs in Windows 7, Vista, and XP.

To run MSConfig, open the Start menu and type “msconfig.exe” (without the quotes) in the Search box. As you type, results display. When you see “msconfig.exe,” click on it or press Enter, if it is highlighted.

Click the Startup tab on the System Configuration main window. A list of all the startup programs displays with a check box next to each one. To prevent a program from starting up with Windows, select the check box next to the desired program so there is NO check mark in the box. Click OK once you have made your choices.

A dialog box displays telling you that you may need to restart your computer for the changes to take affect. Click Restart to restart your computer immediately. If are not ready to restart your computer, click Exit without restart.

Disabling Startup Programs in Windows 8 or 8.1 or 10

Windows 8 and 8.1 make it really simple to disable startup applications. All you have to do is open up Task Manager by right-clicking on the Taskbar, or using the CTRL + SHIFT + ESC shortcut key, clicking “More Details,” switching to the Startup tab, and then using the Disable button.

Top 10 Features Of Windows 8

Following the release of Windows 8 Developer Preview, many sites have done reviews on what the next Windows system will be like. The reviews are mostly positive, with some hailing Windows 8 as the next revolution in the technology of computer operating systems (OS).

There are two distinct parts to Windows 8 - the desktop, which looks and feels a lot like Windows 7, and the all-new, all-singing, all-dancing Start page, which is a complete departure for the operating system.

If you've just upgraded, it may take you some time to discover all of the tools hidden away in the nooks and crannies of Windows 8, so here are the top 10 hard-to-find features you should be aware of.

Here are brief descriptions to some top features you would be keen to know about:

1. The secret Start menu

Moving your mouse cursor down to the bottom-left of the screen and left-clicking switches to the tiled Start page... but if you right-click instead, you'll be met with a menu linking to key areas of the operating system, including Control Panel, the command prompt and the Task Manager.

 2. Innovative & Dynamic Desktop

The tiles-based interface, or the Metro UI, will be the first thing you see upon logging in to Windows 8. At first glance, the UI seems to go intuitively with touchscreen devices like tablets and smartphones. Indeed, in such devices, you tap on those apps to open them. The grid layout seems to facilitate such interactions. Needless to say, you can customize your grid by adding and arranging applications.

3. Simple shutdown

It's the same keyboard shortcut as in previous versions of Windows, but it's worth mentioning here because Windows 8 makes shutting down your PC more drawn out. Rather than opening the Charms bar, clicking Settings, selecting the Power button and choosing 'Shut down', simply press Alt+F4 while viewing the desktop. You can then press Enter to shut down the PC or choose an alternative option from the drop-down menu

 4. Improved Search Function

8 has no search box at the bottom of the Start menu. Heck, it doesn’t even have the trademark Start menu! That doesn’t mean that there’s no convenient search function available. All you need to do is to type anything, and a search box will appear from the right and give you the results. The search capability is even stronger this time, displaying all the matching apps and files instantaneously.

 5. Built-in screenshots

Windows 7 had the Snipping Tool for taking screenshots, and this tool is still around in Windows 8.

However, there's an even easier way to capture what's happening on your display - press the Windows key and the PrtScn button together, and a PNG grab will be automatically saved to your Pictures library.

6. Keyboard shortcuts

Swiping and tapping around Windows 8 is fine on a touchscreen interface, but what about standard laptops and desktops? Knowing the keyboard shortcuts for Windows 8 can save you a lot of clicking and dragging with the mouse, and make it easier to navigate the operating system.

Win+C brings up the Charms bar, for example, while pressing the Windows key on its own switches between the desktop and the Start page.  Another useful one: hit Ctrl+Tab on the Start page to switch to the 'All apps' view

 7. Reinstall Windows

Here's a feature you might not come across until something goes wrong - Windows' new reinstall routine, known as Reset (on the PC Settings page).

There's no need to dig out discs or serial codes, because everything you need is already available, hidden away on the hard drive.

8. Speedy Boot Time

The load and boot up speed has improved significantly over Windows’ predecessors. This is partly due to the better resource allocations to applications and the system. When compared to Windows 7 desktop CPU, Windows 8 has an even speedier boot time.

 9. File History

Windows 8 can keep track of previous versions of your important files, which can be a lifesaver if you accidentally delete a document or a favourite photo becomes corrupted.

The feature - File History - is not enabled by default, so you'll have to activate it from the System and Security section of Control Panel. The only caveat is you'll need a second hard drive available, whether this is external, internal or networked.

 10. Sync your settings

Windows 8 supports the old user account system, but it can also create a new kind of user account that's linked to your Windows ID, and pulls in information from SkyDrive, Xbox, Hotmail/Outlook and all the other cloud services the company is pushing.

A linked account can also sync your Windows settings (from your desktop wallpaper to your browsing history) across machines, which is handy if you have multiple computers at home or at work.

Launch the Settings charm, then choose 'Change PC settings' and open the 'Sync your settings' page to configure the feature.

How to Take Screenshots on Almost Any Device

Screenshots are a great way to prove a point, build a case, or just send someone something interesting on your screen. If you don’t know how to take screenshots, then you’re really missing out.

All the major platforms now support easy screenshots. Windows users have always been able to take a snap of their screen by pressing the “PrtScn” (Print Screen) button, which would capture the screen’s output to the clipboard. However, from there, you usually had to load an intermediary application (MS Paint, for example) to paste it into, and then save it to a file.

 Windows 8.1

Any Windows version previous to 8 or 8.1, is going to use the old school PrtScn-Paste-Save method described earlier. Of course, you can always use a screenshot program and that solves the problem to a large extent. In Windows 8.1, Microsoft finally introduced native screenshot operations, meaning that as soon as you take a screenshot, it is saved to the hard drive as a file.

The three main Windows screenshot methods are as follows:

“PrtScn” copies the screenshot to the clipboard. “Windows + PrtScn” takes a screenshot, which is then saved to the user’s Pictures/Screenshots folder.

Take a screenshot on your Mac

 Capture your entire screen

Press Command (⌘)-Shift-3. The screenshot is added to your desktop. This is similar to using Print Screen on a PC.

 Capture some of your screen

Press Command (⌘)-Shift-4, and then drag the crosshair pointer to select the area. Hold Shift, Option, or the Space bar while you drag to resize the selection area. To cancel, press Escape (esc) before you release the mouse button.

Capture a menu

Click the menu to reveal its contents, then press Command (⌘)-Shift-4 and drag the crosshair pointer over the area.

To take a screenshot of the menu without the title, hover over the menu, press Command (⌘)-Shift-4 and the Space bar.

To cancel, press Escape (esc) before you click.

Android Devices

Android devices are many and widely varied, but screenshots on them are more or less universal, assuming you’re using Android as Google intended it.

On the majority of newer Android devices running version 4 or higher, you can execute a screenshot by pressing “Power + Volume Down.” Sometimes a manufacturer will include a screenshot option on the power menu, which you can access by holding down the power button until the menu appears.

Screenshots will be saved to your devices internal storage. You should be able to access them using your preferred photos or gallery app.

 IOS devices (iPhones and iPads)

If you’re using an iPhone or an iPad, then things are blessedly simple and universal. Apple doesn’t have to worry about device makers changing things around, because it controls both the software and hardware from start to finish.

To take a screenshot on an iOS device hold the “Power” button and press the “Home” button. The screen will flash and your screenshot will be saved to your device’s internal storage, which you can then view, edit, and share using the Photos app.
